Vote or Die! (updated: 11/3/23)

In this composition I will explore my most recent position as a campaign canvasser for the 2022 midterms.   I will seek to elaborate on tactics that I utilized to stay safe while swaying the hearts and minds of those encountered on the varied political spectrum (!).  I will also explore insights acquired from the conversational phase of the endeavor.  But mostly, I will try to impart the kind of wisdom that causes you to walk a little slower in the shade and a little faster in the sun.   I have nothing but favorable feelings for those I've worked for and with during this campaign season, and it would be a privilege to serve again. My Struggle I found it best to map out my day the night before.  I preferred going to politically opposed or unsafe areas in the early morning--as to avoid pre-determinately doomed conversations and unnecessary bloodshed ( https://youtu.be/V3GLrKfY9f8 ).  I knew how many houses that I had to visit per hour, a...

Time Well-Spent

Time Well-Spent “Adam can you ring out your mop?” Said the rookie.  Adam was incensed; in fact, he sensed the affront minutes before the chiding request.  It was like a sick-sense Adam often got: he always knew when the world would cuck him.  Adam replies, “Focus on your own work.”  Though less eloquent and certainly less comprehensive than Adam would have liked, the riposte seemed to have staved off further attack.   Truth be told, Adam had a bigger game plan in mind than doing the right thing.  In Adam’s mind, he was not only saturating the floor for a brighter shine, he was saturating life itself—if only life would appreciate his sheening intent.  But right now, Adam felt hard-pressed and immediately started ruminating over his methodical process to make sure it was justifiable in the higher court.  He reformulated his response for a more business-conscious mindset: “I can saturate the floor sufficiently and cover more area if I...

The best idea machine that you have is you.  Once you know how to look at a particular situation and yield benefit from your observation, you will be able to look at other situations with a similar mindset and produce similar results.  As Steven Johnson says, "if you want more inspiration, get more parts on the table" As "the father of systematic economics, David Ricardo, is believed to have said once, 'profits are not made by differential cleverness, but by differential stupidity.'" Simply put, "most suppliers...Do not think."  This is because businesses are stuck in the flow created by predecessors who had some good ideas of their own, but whose efficacy was limited by the variability of that time period.    So don't be surprised when your ideas are not welcomed.   When presenting your refinements, it's important to show tact, especially when you're a subordinate.   And don't take it personally, and remember that a good id...

Impromptu Linear Thought Practice (Updated: 12/11/23)

Image
I have an idea of pursuing a line of thought.   I believe it’s called linear thinking.   I might have derived that term from math, though I am unfamiliar with it’s mathematical operation.   This is clearly not a scientific application of the process of linear thinking.   This is just some idea that I have in my mind and I thought that it could be beneficial to pursue a path of adjacent thought.   Follow the rabbit down the hole, sort of speak.   But where do I begin?   Certainly it matters since that will be the starting point an opus of the thought line, or line of thought.   Perhaps I have already started it.   Perhaps the starting point was the decision to pursue a line of thought to it’s conclusion.   But where does one conclude a line of thought based on pursuing the line of thought.   This reminds of me of Martin Heidegger’s attempt at describing Dasein—or being in time.   How do I describe being in time beyond the...

Commonplace Book (updated 11/03/24)

Image
Below is a binder of book excerpts that I have collected over the years.  Apparently, there's an official name for it: A commonplace book.  Great minds like " Milton, Bacon, Locke--were all zealous believers in the memory enhancing powers of the commonplace book"--at least, that's what an excerpt from my commonplace book tells me.  Every day I read a page from three different sections, so I can reacquaint myself  with the new and old. Below are the books that I have most recently transcribed and added to my commonplace book (And who says that work hiatus is boring!).  I record and recite word definitions too! A technique that I have intuitively discovered for greater highlighting and book transcription efficiency is to highlight the first and last word in a squiggle-like manner.  Not only will ink be saved but you will have several reference points to which you could refer to, say, if for whatever reason, you got distracted during the transcription process....

We Must Walk Before We Run I imagine that most of us believe that we can just “turn on, tune in, and drop out” when chillin’ in our own casa.  But anyone who has ever tripped over a dog bone lying unattended on the living room floor knows that conscientious walking is just as necessary as conscientious driving.  Sure, the consequences of DWI often outweigh of those WWI (Walking While Inconsiderate), but if you’ve ever witnessed a man walking into another man—one of which, usually the recipient, responds ungraciously—you will understand that walking requires attentive consideration too.     I would say that there are safe spaces to walk—but really, there aren’t.  Park pathways could be idy...

Headcount Flow Management (updated 11/7/23)

In this composition I wanted to emphasize policy reformation in hiring and worker leave. Further, I think that the implementation of the two week-notice commendation(TWNC) and complementary technological mechanism described herein would greatly reduce employee-employer and employee-customer conflict.   I nstead of dismissing disgruntled workers' concerns--whether it's about promotion, pay increase, opportunities, working conditions, etc.--delay unexpected turnover by explaining the reality of the situation, and suggest that the worker attain a metric or achievement noteworthy before throwing in the towel or unexpectedly rage-quitting.  Once the intent to leave has been expressed, offer to provide proof of their noteworthy metric to carry with them to their next career opportunity.  This will not only keep your disgruntled worker on-board until a replacement is found, but will also turbo-charge his/her performance until the end.  A go-out-with-a-bang mentality....
